MATH: We have moved on from Topic 2 (Adding and Subtracting decimals) and Topic 3: Multiplication,  and are now in Topic 6: Multiplying Decimals.  In this topic, we will practice estimating products of decimals, using mental math to multiply decimals, patterns when multiplying decimals by powers of ten.  We'll continue to practice distributive property, exponents, and multiplying larger numbers.  We will also continue to name values of numbers, throughout each place value. We will occasionally review writing numbers in standard, written, and expanded forms.  We'll also keep reviewing decimals, through ten thousandth place value.

Remember, students can access their math book (and workbook) online through pearsonsuccessnet.com

***Math vocabulary can be studied on the Spelling City site, under the Math Vocabulary lists. Once they choose the current math vocabulary, make sure students select vocabulary game practice (so they are practicing meanings, not spelling).

READING: We are reading unit 3, week 1 (U3,w1).  This story is taken from the book Wings for the King.   Students can access parts of their reading book online through pearsonsuccessnet.com, and vocabulary practice can be found on the Spelling City site, under the Reading Street 5th grade Vocabulary lists.  Make sure students select vocabulary game practice, so they are practicing meanings, not spelling.

We are also identifying main idea, theme, inference, text structure, text features, and point of view.

WORD STUDY: This week, we will focus on the prefix SUB- (meaning under/opposite).  Practice can be found on the Spelling City site, under the Prefix/Suffix lists. Make sure students select vocabulary game practice, so they are practicing meanings, not spelling.

SPELLING:  Spelling words will go along with the reading stories.  So, whatever unit/week we are reading, we will be on the same unit/week's words.  Students can use the Spelling City page to practice these words through the week.  Make sure they are selecting the spelling games specifically, so they get practice in that area, not the meanings of the words.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Now that it is past midterm, our focus will be science, so social studies will be pushed in when possible. We wrapped up Chapters 1 and 2, which is our country's regions.  We are now in Chapter 11, and the American Revolution.  will also be studying the Constitution.  Throughout the year, we will be using the textbook, as well as supplemental artifacts from Discovery Education's Social Studies TechBook, and online resources that will be posted in their Google Classroom.

***Some of our Social Studies vocabulary can be studied on the Spelling City site, under the Social Studies Vocabulary lists. Once they choose the current Social Studies vocabulary, make sure students select vocabulary game practice (so they are practicing meanings, not spelling).

SCIENCE:
We started out with Mystery Science, and the lessons about Earth, rotation, revolution, and the seasons.  We'll now be moving on to studying ecosystems. In addition to the
Mystery Science site, we'll be using Discovery Education.  Students can access required materials/information through our Google Science Classroom and www.discoveryeducation.com

***Some of our Science vocabulary can be studied on the Spelling City site, under the Science Vocabulary lists.  Once they choose the current science vocabulary, make sure students select vocabulary game practice (so they are practicing meanings, not spelling).

GRAMMAR:
We have been reviewing nouns, action verbs, and adjectives.  We've also been reviewing the 4 types of sentences.

We're also using our textbooks and reading books to focus on and identify when apostrophes should be used, as well as the rules of punctuation with dialogue.  Many students still use an apostrophe when making a word plural.  We're also using No Red Ink for practicing this skill.

WRITING:
We are starting the year practicing writing all responses in complete sentences, using key words from the questions.  Students know this is expected at all times, and is referred to as the steps R.A. (Restate using key words-without pronouns-, and Answer the question.)

Soon, students will be expected to provide evidence from passages to prove their responses. We will use the acronym RACES: Restate the question using key words, Answer the question, Cite specific evidence from the text that answer the question, Explain how this relates to and proves your response is correct, and Sum it up with a final thought. Examples of how to start each part are posted on their Google Reading Classroom.

Students will also begin writing short summaries of reading passages.

We will read a lot of non-fiction articles that coincide with other classroom content. I find these from sites such as Newsela, CommonLit, and DigitalReadWorks.

My goal is to make the students much more comfortable using written responses across the content areas. Many times, we do this in Google Docs, so we can communicate back and forth online (directly on their writing piece).
